Danny Bryant's Redeyeband

Danny Bryant's Redeyeband - Black and White - 2008 - Continental Blue Heaven

'Sixth album Black & White is the latest offensive in this war of attrition. and surely enough to push Bryant to his rightful place on the podium. If this doesn't tip him over the edge, we'll eat our hats.' - Blues Album Of The Month (May 08) - Classic Rock, May 08

A great rocking blues album from Danny Bryant, Ken Bryant, and Trevor Barr, and a commercial and critical success. Guys like Danny Bryant are the real bluesmen out there, seldom achieving the credit they deserve for maintaining a high standard of modern blues rock. Listen to Danny Bryant's RedEyeBand's "Shadows Passed" and "Days Like This" albums, and buy his "Live" album. Terrific stuff. [All tracks @ 320 Kbps: File size = 118 Mb]

BIO

Danny Bryant was born in Hertfordshire England in July 1980. First hailed as a ‘young guitar prodigy’ Danny began playing guitar aged 15, turning professional just three years later, and in the last decade has paid his dues clocking up endless miles of travelling and approximately two thousand shows in many countries around the world. After a decade of hard toil he now gets the recognition he so well deserves, being acknowledged by those in the business as one of the cream of the crop of this generation of blues artists, ably backed by his rhythm section of his father Ken on bass and Trevor Barr on drums. In a career that has seen Danny perform on the same bill as such names as Joe Cocker, Carlos Santana, Greg Allman, Walter Trout, Buddy Guy, Peter Green, and former Rolling Stone Mick Taylor to mention just a few, Danny and his band have steadily carved a huge and loyal fan base around the world. So far the band have released six internationally acclaimed CDs, their fourth release ‘Days Like This’ featured a stunning duet with special guest blues legend Walter Trout (John Lee Hooker, Canned Heat, John Mayall) The following year saw Danny signing a deal with premier label Rounder Records, a home to many blues legends. The band’s first album for Rounder/Continental “Live” hit the I-Tunes top ten blues charts in 6 countries, including Italy (where it is the labels most successful blues release) Holland, Belgium and Germany leading to major festival appearances and sold out club dates all across Europe. A track from ‘Live’ was included on a compilation CD released by Virgin/Emi entitled “The Best Blues Album In The World Ever” Danny appeared alongside many giants of music, including Johnny Winter, Gary Moore, Albert Collins, George Thorogood and ZZ Top. In March 2008 the band released “Black and White” a commercial and critical success, as the album garnered glowing approval from Europe’s leading music press and guitar magazines, as well as features, reviews, and articles in highly respected publications including The Independent, Classic Rock Magazine and Mojo- leading to the band’s biggest selling album so far and a year of relentless touring which has seen them play 100 shows in 12 different countries. February 2010 saw the release of “Just As I Am”, the band’s fastest selling and most critically acclaimed album to date. Appearing on Blues charts across Europe and with glowing reviews from the international press, and numerous interviews and features in music magazines such as Guitarist, Classic Rock (the title track was issued free on the cover mount CD) and Guitar Techniques – “Just as I am” has turned out to be a milestone album for the band. hr Big Band (Steely Dan Related)

hr Big Band - Do It Again: hr Big Band Plays Three Decades of Steely Dan - 2004 - hr-musik

"More than almost any other Big Band in the world, the hr Big Band stands for innovation and variety. It unfolds its activities in a broad range of styles that covers the roots of jazz, well-known Swing standards, discerning light entertainment and musicals, avant-garde jazz and popular music such as HipHop. World music, crossover concerts such as 'Literature and Jazz', 'Jazz and Film', 'Jazz and Dance', as well as children's and Christmas concerts are further projects with which the Big Band of the Hessischer Rundfunk (German Public Radio of Hessen) addresses very specific audiences. Again and again, the hr Big Band dares to tackle unusual projects and often treads new musical paths. The over 50 year-old ensemble is directed by Chief Conductor Jörg Achim Keller. His philosophy of consistently using the entire spectrum of his band (and its individual musicians), including the regular use of instruments such as baritones, tubas, various flutes, low saxophones and clarinets, provides access to new, often symphonic-sounding possibilities. Thanks to the wide range of its musical work, the hr Big Band has become an irreplaceable part of cultural life in Hessen and beyond. They performed with musical guests like Ray Charles, Mike Stern, Michel Petrucciani, Michael Brecker, Phil Woods and many others."

Ten Steely Dan tracks and one Donald Fagen tune arranged for the hr Big Band by Fred Sturm. All tracks are jazz arrangements, and feature Ryan Ferreira on electric guitar. He studied at the Eastman School of Music and has performed with musicians that include Peter Erskine, Dave Holland, Bobby McFerrin, and Kenny Wheeler

Grace Potter & The Nocturnals

Grace Potter & The Nocturnals - This Is Somewhere - 2007 - Hollywood Records

Grace Potter & the Nocturnals have long been impressing crowds on the jam band, roots rock, and even jazz tour circuits, and now, with a label deal for the very first time in their lives, they finally have the opportunity to reach an even broader audience. Of course, Potter already has a pretty devout following, thanks to her richly expressive voice and the musical talents that she and her bandmembers possess, and these fans shouldn't be disappointed with This Is Somewhere, an album that, while it roots itself firmly in the Southern rock tradition, also flirts with Norah Jones-esque jazz ("Lose Some Time"), horn-driven grooves ("Mastermind"), and even pretty straightforward MOR pop ("Mr. Columbus," which, with its simple melodies and lyrics, is one of the weaker tracks on the record), in doing so creating a solid collection. Not every track here is superb -- the aforementioned "Mr. Columbus," for example, as well as "Mastermind," which is too unsyncopated and forced to pull off the frenzy of saxophones that appears -- but Potter is showing herself to be a very adept songwriter, able to convey witty irony (in "Ah Mary," an almost angry criticism of the U.S.) as well as reflections on death (coming from the perspective of an 84-year-old woman in "Big White Gate") and gentle love ("Stop the Bus") equally skillfully and avoiding many of the lyrical clichés often tied to themes of that sort. Yes, This Is Somewhere is a bit top-heavy, with most of stronger cuts tucked safely into its first half, and sometimes Potter seems to be trying a little too hard (in "Falling or Flying," for example), her Southern accent just a little too affected, but the album is still impressive, with a lot of passion, energy, and soul from a very able group of young musicians. © Marisa Brown © 2011 Rovi Corporation © 2011 Rovi Corporation. ABOUT GRACE POTTER

Born in Waitsfield, VT, Grace Potter grew up in a family that encouraged her artistic pursuits in areas from music to theater, the latter of which she was studying at St. Lawrence University when drummer Matt Burr heard her singing at an open-mike night in 2002 and asked if she would form a band with him. She declined, but when her high-school friend and bass player Courtright Beard enrolled in their college, she reconsidered the invitation, and the three of them began to write and perform jazz-influenced songs, Potter also taking duties on the Hammond B-3. Soon, guitarist Scott Tournet joined, and the bandmembers, calling themselves Grace Potter & the Nocturnals -- thanks to their late-night practice habits -- began to think seriously about making music their careers. When Burr graduated in 2003, they decided to move back to Vermont to some land that Potter's parents owned and dedicate themselves more fully to their craft, replacing Beard (who chose to stay at school) with Bryan Dondero in the process. In 2004 they self-released their debut, Original Soul, receiving positive response and comparisons to artists like Norah Jones and early Bonnie Raitt. This in turn garnered major-label offers, but the band preferred to build its fan base by constant touring and festival appearances. Word of their electric performance spread, and shortly after their second album, Nothing But the Water -- also self-released -- came out in 2005, Grace Potter & the Nocturnals signed to Hollywood Records, with their third full-length, This Is Somewhere, hitting shelves nationwide in August 2007. In 2010, Grace Potter & the Nocturnals was released; Hollywood pulled out all the stops in order to break the band internationally. © Marisa Brown © 2011 Rovi Corporation. BIO

The Tyler, TX-raised Bugs Henderson took his cues from the wealth of great roadhouse blues and blues-rock guitarists that were around Dallas, including Freddie King, Johnny Winter, and literally dozens of others on the Texas music scene of the '60s. Henderson has cited James Burton, Ricky Nelson's guitarist, as a major influence. Henderson got his first guitar, a Montgomery Ward Airline, one year at Christmas when he was just six years old. Like Louisianan Sonny Landreth, also an exquisite player, Henderson began working in a record store in his teens. As a teenager, he would sneak out of the house to see live shows at local clubs, and he formed his first band, the Sensors, at 16. He later joined a friend, Ronnie Weiss, in a band called Mouse & the Traps, and they charted their first regional radio hit, "Public Execution" in 1966. Although he played in a procession of rock bands and studio sessions for country and rock musicians, by the early '70s Henderson realized the only music he was truly passionate about was blues. His mentor and friend, the legendary Freddie King, advised him to form his own band and follow his heart. By 1978, Henderson released his first record, At Last, for Texas-based Armadillo Records. The album would be the first of more than 14 records in the ensuing three decades. By the late '90s, Henderson was recording for the Portland, OR-based Burnside Records. His albums for that label include 1998's Have Blues...Must Rock, and a later release, Backbop. Other releases include Electric Snow, Stormy Love, Adventures of the Shuffle Kings, and Gitarbazndrumz. Henderson lives in Garland, TX with his four children and has a simple, overriding philosophy of life: family first, music second, career third. As he explained in the biography accompanying one of his Burnside Records releases, "I couldn't have the life I have now and be a major star. Couldn't go to my kids' ball games. I wouldn't give that up for anything." For the limited touring he does do each year, Henderson takes his family on the road with him: son Buddy plays drums with his father, son Cody works as a sound tech for the band, and daughter Rose sells merchandise. Despite his limited touring and the limited distribution of his recordings over the years with smaller labels like Burnside, Henderson and his varying bands have shared stages with guitar icons including Ted Nugent, B.B. King, Eric Clapton, and Stevie Ray Vaughan. One of Henderson's guitars hangs proudly in the Hard Rock Café' in Dallas, alongside instruments donated by Chet Atkins and Lee Ritenour. Henderson recently released a DVD, Live at the Grenada, recorded in Texas, and his website indicates he continues to tour Europe, select festivals around the U.S., and in clubs and theaters around Texas. He made a conscious decision some years ago to avoid grueling road trips, and said in a biography for Burnside Records, "I tell people all the time that I know you're supposed to stop and smell the roses as you go through life, but in my case I stopped and moved into the garden." © Richard Skelly © 2011 Rovi Corporation. Tower of Power

Tower of Power - Power 1987 - Cypress Records

Stepping back from its 1979 disco foray, Tower of Power dropped out of sight for the better part of a decade, as internal strife and member changes ripped the band asunder and the Tower of Power Horns spent more time backing other musicians. Returning to the studio in 1986 with only Steve Fulton and Willie James Fulton held over from the earlier regime, the band recorded the shaky TOP LP (different from a similarly titled 1993 date). Initially released only in Sweden, the album was trimmed of two tracks, retitled Power, and racked in America the following year. But even the rejigging couldn't help what ultimately emerged as an uninspired and mediocre set, showcasing musicians who sounded like they really didn't care anymore. It was a feeling that was only reinforced by their fans -- the album was the first to miss the charts since their 1970 debut. From the very '80s synthed-out opener "Baby's Got the Power" to "Ball and Chain," with its multiple rock riffs, and on to the mid-tempo "On the One," it feels like the band never really checked into the studio. Only on the brass-heavy "Credit" and "Count on Me" did listeners find a glimmer of the TOP they loved. The lackadaisical instrumental "Boys Night Out," meanwhile, found a modicum of success with its inclusion on the soundtrack to the Dudley Moore vehicle Arthur 2. With the songs feeling fanned only to a half life from the formerly fiery funkers, Power appeared and sank out of sight with horrifying rapidity. The band followed right behind, dropping off the radar, not to re-emerge for another four years. © Amy Hanson © 2011 Rovi Corporation. One of the great TOP's weaker albums. In fact the song material is mostly mundane and unoriginal. However, the musicianship is good especially the sax and trumpet work. For this alone, the album is worth posting. One bad album doesn't make a bad group. "Power" was recorded with only two of the band's original line-up. The album was originally released in 1986 entitled "T.O.P."on the Danish Genlyd label for distribution in Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland. "T.O.P." excluded the Tracks "On The One", and "Up Against Yourself", and included the Tracks "Heartbreak In The Makin'", "You Ought To Be Havin' Fun", and "Doggin' At The Cathouse". Confusingly, in 1993, Tower Of Power released another album called "T.O.P." on the Epic label which has nothing to do with the two albums mentioned here. Listen to TOP's classic "Urban Renewal" album. Check out "The Very Best Of Tower Of Power The Warner Years" @ TOP/VBofTOP-TWY and check this blog for more TOP releases

SHORT BIO

The renowned horn-driven funk outfit Tower of Power has been issuing albums and touring the world steadily since the early '70s, in addition to backing up countless other musicians. The group's leader since the beginning has always been tenor saxophonist Emilio Castillo, who was born in Detroit, but opted to pursue his musical dreams in Oakland, CA. It was in Oakland that Castillo put together a group called the Motowns, which as its name suggested, specialized in '60s-era soul. Castillo teamed up with a baritone sax player (and Motowns fan) Stephen "Doc" Kupka, and soon the Motowns had transformed into Tower of Power (one of the first tunes the duo penned together was "You're Still a Young Man," which would eventually go on to be one of the TOP's signature compositions). Tower of Power played regularly in the Bay Area throughout the late '60s, as its lineup often swelled up to ten members, including such other mainstays as Greg Adams on trumpet and vocals and Rocco Prestia on bass. By 1970, the funk outfit had inked a recording contract with Bill Graham's San Francisco Records, resulting in the group's debut the same year, East Bay Grease, which failed to make an impression on the charts as TOP was still trying to find their own sound. But it all came together quickly for the group, as 1972's Bump City would touch off a string of classic hit releases, including 1973's self-titled release (which included another one of the group's most enduring tunes, "What Is Hip?"), 1974's Back to Oakland, plus 1975's Urban Renewal and In the Slot. While Tower of Power remained a must-see live act, the quality of their subsequent records became erratic, resulting in some admirable releases (Ain't Nothin' Stoppin' Us Now, Live and in Living Color) and several uninspired albums that are best skipped over (We Came to Play, Back on the Streets). Despite the dip in the quality of their albums, Tower of Power remained a much in-demand backing group for some of pop/rock's biggest names, including Elton John, Santana, Bonnie Raitt, Huey Lewis, Little Feat, David Sanborn, Michelle Shocked, Paula Abdul, Aaron Neville, Aerosmith, Michael Bolton, Billy Preston, PiL, Rod Stewart, Toto, Merl Saunders, and others. Tower of Power remains very active to this day, keeping up a brisk touring schedule and issuing such new albums as 1999's Soul Vaccination: Live; while several compilations were issued around the same time: Rhino's double disc What Is Hip?: The Tower of Power Anthology (1999) and Very Best of Tower of Power: The Warner Years (2001), plus Epic/Legacy's Soul With a Capital "S": The Best of Tower of Power (2001). The band celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2008 and still retains 5 original founding members. © Greg Prato © 2011 Rovi Corporation.
